Ascent Trip Report

This was our first overnight backpacking trip with my two youngest boys (Jeff almost age 10, and Alec age 13). My oldest had to work at McDonalds and couldn't go with us. I hiked this mountain many times from the Bethel, ME side. We would spend the night at the Caribou lean-to shelter, and we would enjoy the abundant fresh water at the nearby spring. As we approached the summit and spoke with other hikers, they indicated that the shelter no longer existed. We tried to find the old site, but came up empty. With minimal water, we made camp at the summit. Our hotdog dinner made us all very thirsty. Luckily I had taken the last few juice boxes from the cooler for the car ride, and they were a big hit! We rationed the remaining liter of water for morning. Jeff woke in the middle of the night in tears, and asked if it was okay to have a drink of water. He had a little drink, and we survived the night. We hiked out in the morning and stopped at the first store we came to.
