Ascent Trip ReportI used this address to get to the trail head:
400 Great Mountain Lane
Winchester, VA 22602
I drive up Great Mountain Lane to where the power lines cross the road. There are hunting cabins and shacks on both sides with the road with signs every stating no trespassing. At the entrance of Great Mountain lane there was a large green gate that was open when I drove through. I parked right on the side of the road on the on the northern tree line for the power lines. I started hiking up the hill in the clearing for the power lines. It was 12:40 pm. There are some steep area's and a dog was barking at a cabin on the south side of the power lines. I made good progress up the hill and when I got to the top there is a mounded fence line heading north. I followed this fence line to where it meets the trees. Follow the fence into the woods and you will find a trail with blue trail blazers marking the way. I followed this trail up to the high point. I found a bench mark up on top and an area that clearly appeared to be the highest point arriving at 1:08 pm. I will attach a picture of the bench mark. The benchmark i found was not the main one was it had the arrow pointing to the main one. I looked for it but was not able to find it. I walked around to all the potential high points before heading back to my car. On the way down the steep hill by the power lines I made the mistake of trying to stay in the woods and found myself in a huge batch of thorn bushes. I backtracked back up the hill and then back out in the clearing under the power lines. arriving at the car 1:38 pm.
I would not do this high point in the summer, fall or winter due to issues with hunting (Fall and Winter) and Heavy brush/thorn bushes (Summer and Fall) . I think I was lucky due to a nice spring day (low underbrush) and no one around for hunting.
After I did this hike I read the trip report by Richard Oestreicher and would recommend taking the trail by Capon Woods resort on the WV side of the mountain.
