Ascent Trip ReportCradle Mtn. Is Tasmania's second highest peak, and I was really looking forward to climbing it. However, it wasn't to be. The typhoon that hit the Austrailian Coast sent some bad weather our way.
We made it up through and a ways past the cables before the rain started. The higher we went, the colder it became and the harder it rained. By the time we reached Marion's Lookout, the winds had increased and we had trouble standing upright. We continued on and the rain became hail. We took an extended break in the Kitchen Hut to try and get warm and dry out. We carried on but the rocks were very wet and slippery, and when it began to thunder, our leaders called the trip and we started down. At this point visibility was about 25 feet. Fortunately the rain stopped before we descended the cables.
Just a bit of bad luck that this was the only bad weather during a two week trip. |
