Ascent Trip Report

Started trip at Waterrock Knob Visitor Center and took the maintained trail to the summit of Waterrock Knob. Continued on a manway from just below Waterrock Knob summit, crossing Browning Knob, Fork Ridge, Mount Lyn Lowry, Oldfield Top, and finally summiting Plott Balsam. The trail joined a logging road after a steep descent from Mount Lyn Lowry, heading towards Plott Balsam. Took a short bushwhack to summit Oldfield Top before rejoining the logging road and summiting Plott Balsam. Majority of manway from Waterrock Knob to Plott Balsam has been flagged and is easy enough to follow. Frequency of flagging is reduced after Mount Lyn Lowry, making it necessary to pay closer attention to the trail. Manway is very faint on Plott Balsam. Best approach is to follow the ridgeline to summit. Great views from Waterrock Knob, Browning Knob, and Mount Lynn Lowry. Fork Ridge, Oldfield Top, and Plott Balsam are under tree cover. By going in early spring, the cool temps and lack of undergrowth and briars made the experience more pleasant than if done during the summer.
