Ascent of Green Mountain on 2015-03-20

| Elevation:||8144 ft / 2482 m|
Ascent Trip ReportGreen Mountain was my first peak over 8,000 feet. Weather conditions on this day were warm and clear, but there remained some packed snow and ice along the route, which required extra care for an inexperienced mountain hiker.
From Boulder, I followed Flagstaff Road as it winds its way into the mountains. With ample road parking near the trailhead (39.983335 N, 105.323178 W), I set off east on the Green Mountain West Ridge Trail. Elevation changes were gentle along the first 0.8 miles of this trail, with only the snow and ice providing any difficulty. After reaching an obvious low point, there is a steeper ascent of the peak of Green Mountain (easy class 2) over the final 0.5 miles. The summit area is relatively flat, but the actual high point is atop an obvious 10-15 foot tall boulder, which does require a quick scramble to reach the top of (39.982111 N, 105.301565 W). One of the rocks is topped with a small stone monument, containing a summit register and a map of visible peaks in the distance. Because of the trees, views from the top are somewhat broken, but vistas in most directions can be obtained from different spots near the summit.
The total one-way hike was 1.3 miles, with about 300 feet of vertical gain from the lowest point on the trail.
