Ascent Trip ReportLookout Mountain was my first peak over 7,000 feet, which makes it important to me, even if it was essentially a drive-up. I followed Lookout Mountain Road to the parking area for the Buffalo Bill Museum and Grave (39.733448 N, 105.239041 W). From here, I followed a clearly-marked paved trail to Buffalo Bill's grave site at the top of the mountain. The grave was built at the highest ground (39.732569 N, 105.238284 W), with paved walkways surrounding the memorial, so the terrain was clearly slightly altered. I circled the fenced area to claim the peak. From the parking lot, the walk was about a tenth of a mile, with 40 feet of vertical gain.
Due to trees, the views from Lookout Mountain are somewhat broken, but there are excellent vantage points in several directions from different spots near the parking lot. There were spectacular views to the north and west from a rocky area at the north end of the parking lot, including a view along US Route 6 through Clear Creek Canyon. A terrace near the museum offers the best views to the east, and the entire Denver metro area is visible, roughly 1,500-2,000 feet below.
I didn't go into the Buffalo Bill museum, but the parking area is free, as is access to the grave site at the high point.
