Ascent of High Peak on 2008-12-03
|Date:||Wednesday, December 3, 2008|
|Ascent Type:||Successful Summit Attained|
| Elevation:||1700 ft / 518 m|
Ascent Trip ReportA very easy short road walk and bushwack fron the West side of the mountain, thru open deciduous forest with no obstacles and less than 1 hour RT. Mostly wooded summit, not recommended unless you're after the list "Vermont County Prominence Peaks". Directions to the TH are as noted below.
From the TH walk up the very rough Turnpike Road, uphill in an Easterly direction, for about 10 minutes to "a height of land" at about 1420' elevation, the Road starts to go downhill at this point. I started my bushwack here.
Just prior to reaching "this height of land" you pass a driveway on the left where the Turnpike Road surface once again becomes very good. My guess is that you can drive to this point with a 2WD from the opposite direction (from rte 113 in the village of Thetford Hill drive north on Houghton Hill Road to Turnpike Road).
From "this height of land" I started my easy bushwack following a compass reading of 120 degrees, always looking for the higher ground. Halfway up I crossed a driveway leading to a house to my right. I arrived dead-on the summit never having to check my compass.
Directions to the TH from the East.
From I91, exit 14, drive West on rte 113 for 3.1 miles, going thru the Villages of Thetford Hill and Thetford Center, to 5 Corners Road on the right. Drive N on this smooth gravel 5 Corners Road for 2.36 miles to a "5 Corner junction", make a 120 degree right turn on the smooth Turnpike Road (first Road on the right) and drive generally SE for .87 miles to where the road surface becomes a very rough 4WD. Park here as this is your TH, unless you have a 4WD then you can drive all the way to "the height of land". Do not block the gated driveway on the left.
