Ascent Trip Report

This was a 2 day scheduled hike with Pat Arredondo as the co-leader. On the first day, it was just Pat and myself. On the second day, Pat Vaughn joined us. Woodson, Iron, Eagle are on the Lower Peaks List. Potato Chip is a Peakbagger peak. 3 Sisters was just a hike.
Iron was the standard primary route hike starting at the intersection of Poway Road and Highway 67. It is trail all the way to the top. There were several shortcuts that look like trail. There are signs saying don’t take shortcuts, but they seem to be ignored. After Woodson, we drove a couple of mile up 67 and parked at the fire station where the trail starts. Don’t be confused by a road that is name Mt. Woodson Rd. It doesn’t go to Woodson. Follow the trail a couple of hundred yards to the start of a paved road. Follow this steep road to the summit. We went past the summit about ¼ mile to Potato Chip. There must have been 30-40 people waiting in line to climb out on this unusual rock formation.. We returned the same way. We then drove to the KQ Ranch RV resort where we spent the night.
Next morning drove to the intersection of 78/79 and Pine Hill Rd. (about a mile west of Julian) where we met Pat Vaughn. We followed the peak guide instructions to the trail head (Pine Hill to Eagle Peak road to Boulder Creek road). The road is paved most of the way and the dirt portion was in excellent condition. Any vehicle could make it. When we got to the trailhead, we were astounded to see about 40-50 cars parked along the road. Apparently, 3 Sisters Waterfall is a popular hike with the locals. We only saw one person who went to Eagle. After Eagle, we decided to do the hike to 3 Sisters. The trail is about ½ mile from the start of the Eagle Peak trail. There is a sign post. The trail drops gently about the first ¾ of a mile. The last ¼ mile is a real challenge. It drops 600’ in a quarter of mile. We had to take it slow and easy on that part. We returned the same way. This side trail is about 2 miles round trip, with 800’ loss.
