Ascent Trip Report

Kelley and I picked up our permit to drive the Rincon-Red Box Road along with the combination for the locked gate from the Angeles National Forest office in Glendora. We drove up Highway 39, turned left onto the Rincon-Red Box Road, using the combination to open the gate, then followed the Rincon-Red Box Road about 10.5 miles to another locked gate, parking the truck next to the gate and about 1.2 miles short of the beginning of HPS route 4 to Monrovia Peak. The road is in excellent shape, but I recommend a vehicle with decent clearance to avoid the occasional rock. We hiked up the road and then HPS Route 4 to Monrovia Peak, then followed the ridge down about 1 mile to the Clamshell Road, climbing Rankin Peak along the way, then we went up the fire break to the top of Clamshell Peak. Kelley located the register in a concrete vault with a steel cover on it. To get back to the truck, we followed the Clamshell Road and then the Rincon-Red Box Road back to where we parked. Total stats: 9.2 miles, 5 hours round trip and about 3,550' of elevation gain.
