Ascent Trip Report

It is possible to drive all the way to the Natchitoches Parish highpoint, but it is best not to do it during any hunting seasons, since the entire access route is lined with private individual hunting areas. In addition, it is wise to avoid this route during wet conditions, unless you have 4-wheel drive. Although it had been raining earlier in the day, the rain had stopped and it appeared my son, Marshall, and I were going to be able to drive all the way to the highpoint on a muddy road, but after about 1.5 miles we got stuck in a very muddy section of the access road. We had to work for 15 minutes to get unstuck by getting the car turned sideways on the road after much effort and driving slightly downhill into the dryer ground on the side of the road, then backing up across the mud again to the opposite side of the road where it was dryer. We tried to turn the car around here, but I needed more room and the wheels were in too much mud to backup, so I drove across to the opposite side of the road again and backed up much farther the second time, which allowed me to make a turn and drive on the shoulder of the road in order to get past the worse of the mud. With the car now free to drive again, we left it and hiked .8 mile to the Natchitoches Parish highpoint. We were able to follow the muddy road all the way to where the lookout tower used to be, but without the tower now, there was not much of a view due to the trees. We hiked back to the car and did some aggressive driving over some bad uphill muddy spots to return to the paved road. My car was so muddy that I had to take it through a car wash, but there were still chunks of mud that fell off my car into my motel parking spot the next morning!
