Ascent of Mount Burnham on 2015-03-15
|Date:||Sunday, March 15, 2015|
|Ascent Type:||Successful Summit Attained|
| Elevation:||8997 ft / 2742 m|
Ascent Trip ReportTrip started at Vincent Gap Trailhead to Baden-Powell. Snow fields started at the 2 mile mark and micro spikes were used off and on the entire day. From Baden-Powell the group went the way of the ridgeline off-trail to avoid the snow covering the PCT in route to Burnham Peak. Even more snow was encountered on the way to Throop Peak and the whole North and East side of Throop was covered in snow. Most of the travels between the three peaks was off-trail as the trail was hard to follow under 1-2 feet of snow. From Throop peak we traversed directly West off the ridgeline of the summit and eventually found the trail leading to Dawson's Saddle. The Angeles Crest Hwy had been closed down for the winter at Vincent Gap so no cars could get to this trailhead. Consequently, there were no tracks in the snow here. After one mile toward Dawson's Saddle, a direct route was made to reach the Hwy and from there a five mile walk on the road.... with no cars.... was made back to Vincent Gap. Total 13.09 miles in 6.5 hours with stops for lunch and other breaks at the peaks. After leaving Baden-Powell for Burnham, Throop and beyond.... we encountered no other people the whole day.
