Ascent Trip Report

I started at the access road on U.S. Highway 20 opposite the G.I. Ranch road, 57 miles west of Burns, Oregon. The ground was frozen at first, making for good hiking. I headed up to the north end of the high ridge, hiking over patches of crusty snow. From there to the top was easy. Great views from there! but serious clouds were threatening, so I left the summit, going down the southeast ridge partway. There was deep snow on the east flank leading down into the canyon, so I launched off the cornice and dropped a good 500 vertical feet in a terrific glissade, stridin' and glidin' right down to the jeep trail at the bottom. The temperature had risen, and from there to the highway was a lot of slogging through mud. Very nice workout.
