Ascent Trip Report

For some unknown reason, considering all my years of hiking on Mt. Tam, I have never taken the time to visit the Middle Peak. So today was the day. Limited roadside parking is available at the junction of Ridgecrest Blvd with the Old Railroad Grade and the gated Middle Peak Fire Road, just before Ridgecrest Blvd climbs up to the East Peak parking area. The fire road, mostly shaded, ascends to the Lakeview Tr, then switchbacks up to the leveled, flat summit area of Middle Peak. The fenced, lower eastern area houses an odd, derby-like structure. The summit itself lies in the undergrowth near a telephone pole at the southwest corner of the unfenced western summit area, which has an assortment of FAA-related equipment and a MMWD Middle Peak weather gauge. The solid summit rock is of modest size, requiring only a deft move or two to surmount. However, with my poor balance and being alone, I just touched the flat, sloping top with my hands and let it go at that. An alternative, even shorter approach to Middle Peak is via the Lakeview Tr from its intersection with the Upper Miller Tr and International Tr on Ridgecrest Blvd. Limited roadside parking.
