Ascent Trip ReportI traveled up I501 from Durham for about 15 miles to Rougemont. There's one traffic light in Rougemont. The highway to the east is Red Mountain Rd. Don't turn. Continue on I501 for another 0.7 miles and turn right/east on Harris Mills Rd. After Driving 0.8 miles on Harris Mills turn right onto Mountain Brook Rd. Mountain Brook is not paved. Although there are steep sections the road is well maintained and should pose no problem for 2wd.
After one mile of travel you can go no further. Gated. To the left is 957 Mountain Brook Rd., a castle that has seen better days. Park along the road and walk back a 100 yds to telephone pole IB36 and head up behind it thru the woods another 100 yds or so to the Red Mt summit. There's a commo tower just below the summit to the west. |
