Ascent Trip ReportThe signed turnoff from CA 162 (FR 7) to Long Point is 11.9 miles west of County Rd 306. Here FSR 21N65 proceeds north; after about 0.4 miles a good spur road goes right 0.1 mile to Long Point. A USGS marker (1964) is placed by the foundation of the former fire lookout. This open area sits in isolation overlooking the extensive Grindstone Creek drainage and the upper ridges of the range.
In 1953 15 firefighters lost their lives in the deadly 1300-acre Rattlesnake Fire
in this area of the Mendocino N.F. A memorial to the fallen and details of the fire can be viewed at the Grindstone Overlook on FR 7.
