|Ascent Type:||Successful Summit Attained|
| Elevation:||1920 ft / 585 m|
Ascent Trip ReportI climbed Gilson by bushwacking from the South-East side, starting at the junction of North road and a Woods road. The directions to this TH are as noted below. I had a sunny, cold, breezy day with a 3-4" thick blanket of fluffy stuff. Beautifull day for the mountains.
DESCRIPTION OF THE CLIMB FROM THE SOUTH-EAST.
I left the TH on North road with a compass reading of 344 degrees, first following the winding Woods road for about 1/4 of a mile to a clearing just before a low boggy area. Staying with my compass reading and the layout of the land I bushwacked my way to the summit, always taking the path of least resistance. The low bright morning sun was directly to my back so all I had to do was follow my own shadow, I checked my compass only a few times. I went over 2 false summits.
The climb, thru the open deciduous woods, was overall easy to moderate, with a few short moderately steep sections. I had to negotiate very little blowdown and a few ledges, but had to fight thru numerous patches of thorn bushes (no fun). I had good footing, only a few slips. Looking back at my route - it might have been somewhat easier if I had stayed more to the right, thereby eliminating the false summits and the ledges. My route however was not difficult.
I arrived dead-on the small summit. A number of concrete foundations and a few wooden beams is evidence of a removed Tower or Cabin. The summit is completely wooded with no views, except for what you see thru the bare trees this time of the year. Not recommended unless of course you are after the "Vermont County Prominence Peaks". Even though this is a short bushwack one should allow 2-3 hours for the return trip.
DIRECTIONS TO THE TH ON THE SOUTH-EAST SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN (from South of St Albans, VT.)
From I89, exit 18, drive E on rtes 104A/104 to Fairfax. At the center of Fairfax rte 104 makes a sharp right, turn left here and go up hill for 100 yds to Fletcher road on the left.
Drive about 6 miles and arrive at a T junction-stop in Fletcher. Take a left on Fairfield road and drive 200 yards to North road on the right. Drive N on North road for 2.42 miles to a Woods road on your left, passing the signed "Boozanhill road" - this is the TH on North road for Gilson's South-East approach.
