Ascent Trip Report

long wait at shuttle boat they can only take 6 people on the boat at a time. Much rain this month and despite being winter, the water table was very high and the roads and trails were full of mud and puddles. Armadillos everywhere. The HP is along the main North South jeep road but finding the exact spot...good luck. Recent control burns allowed some exploration along the deer herd trails in candidate spots but probably not more than a foot of elevation between them. The inner circle of the island is thick pond pine and palmetto whereas the outer perimeter of the island is lush hydric hammock on mucky organic soils with cabbage palm and live oak. Lots of room to walk all over this 1500 acre island state park but it is really best to do as a bike ride. The roads are grassy wooded trails with plenty of room and lots to explore but as hiking trails a little too linear and mono-culture for my taste. Dog had a splendid time especially with all the armadillos.
