Ascent Trip Report

Through research I learned that Freddy who lives at the base of the mountain arranges for you to climb through his property. It is a terra cotta colored two story house about where it would be logical to start up the mountain roughly 7km east of Guayabal. The road is paved all the way.He got me a local named Alvaro to climb the peak. You go up through the pasture on defined trails until you run into a fence on the edge of the forest. I wouldn't have noticed it but there was a gate in the fence below an inconpicuous sign reading Parque Nacional. From there the trail is well marked with ribbons and arrows through the woods pretty much straight up the mountain. The trail goes mostly through the thick woods which limits the views but does provide shelter from the wind and almost constant fog/mist/cloud that is prevalent on peaks in Costa Rica. On the way up there are two short side trails a couple hundred meters long to miradors, viewpoints that let you get a view. The views were great from these locations which is a good thing because the summit was socked in as usual. The volcanos to the north were covered as well. Once we got to the top where there is a sign saying 2028M I could see trees ahead that apppeared higher. Alvaro said we were at the top. I went ahead several hundred meters and I don't know if I was higher or not. At this point you are in a cloud and the trail is basically squeezing between and over soaking wet cloud forest. You can reach Alvaro at 8329-3565 or Freddy at 8989-8342. They charged me 25,000 Colones or a little less than $50. You mainly need the guide to get to the edge of the forest and find where the trail is. After that you can follow the trail easily, and you really do want to go on the trail. The vegetation gets really wet and thick at the top.
