Ascent Trip ReportAndrew, Brianne, Shanon, and I parked in the lot near the closed gate. We walked the road for roughly 2 miles before reaching the summer parking lot and trailhead. The slide had about 4-6 inches of snow on it, though there were some thin spots. A short distance up the herd path there is small rock face which was covered in ice. Last time I was there we took the path to the right. This time we went left. Both paths converge after a short distance. The first time up we wondered where the other path went and now I know (they both go to the same place). We found the summit sign resting in the tree branches. The views were spectacular. It was a nice clear day. The exact opposite of our fall hike in the Dix range where we were hiking in a cloud the whole time. We debated going down the slide versus continuing to the summit of South Dix. We pushed on to South Dix. The exposed section before you go back into the trees was really cold and windy. We ended up walking past the summit by a 100 ft or so before realizing and turning back to find the carved tree marking the summit. From there we took the path toward and over Pough. We found the Lilian Brook herd path down from the illegal campsite in the col between Pough and Hough. This was the first time I was on this herd path. There were some snowshoe tracks we were following which took us out somewhere between the two lean-to's. I thought we were supposed to come out near the Lilian Brook lean-to so I'm not sure if we were on the actual herd path or our own path but either way it worked out. It got dark right before we got to the lean-to. It was a nice easy 4 plus miles back to the car from the lean-to.
