Ascent Trip ReportJerome County – West Kimama Butte
It was approximately 3:30 in the afternoon, the sun was breaking out and it seemed like a good idea to go for two on the first day of the year. From Kimama we headed south west and then south to the Kimama Butte access road. From here we went due west until the road eventually turns south and ascends the north east slope to the top of Kimama Butte. We arrived about 4:00 p.m. to a spectacular view of the entire Magic Valley. The sun was shining, it was up to 14 degrees and we were having a glorious day. After snapping a few pictures we headed back north to the powerline road, and then turned west up and over the north shoulder of Kimama Butte. We then found the road that heads south west crossing the Lincoln/Minidoka county line, then headed for the Minidoka/Jerome county line. We wandered around a bit and found the knob and the sub-knob on the topographic map, took latitude and longitude readings and ciphered that we were darn close to the Jerome County highpoint. It was now 5:00 p.m. with the sun on the horizon and temperatures falling. From that little nub I took my first selfie for 2015 and considered Jerome county bagged. Two down, 42 to go!
From here we descended on to the west toward farm ground, ended up headed back east and stopped to take a photo of an incredible sunset and moonrise over Jerome/Minidoka county Lapland. We finally intersected 1150 West road and headed south toward the end of an eventful day. At baseline road we bid farewell to the others who had come from Twin Falls, and headed home, arriving back in Rupert at 6:00 p.m.
