Ascent Trip ReportWe got a late start intending to climb Tantalus, following hike 10 in the Hikers Guide to Oahu, but, luckily, while we made a stop at a local ranch for my wife to treat her horse's foot, I realized the book's hike was AROUND Tantalus, and there was supposed to be an easy way up it--so it's postponed. I instead decided to just find someplace nice to hike and picked out the closer hike 16 from the book, up the Keaiwa Heiau (aka Aiea) Loop Trail. Once hiking, I recalled marking a nearby peak (Pu'U'Ua'u) on my GPS, and, finding it but a mile away, decided to see if I could find this peak from the trail. What I found was a nice use trail going off the loop trail and taking us up to the top. The best views from the peak were of the H3 tunnel going to the north side of Oahu (at the saddle before the last part of the climb). We started hiking at 4 pm and got to the peak around 5 pm, zig zagging along the trail. Not much to see through the trees at the top, so we started back to the van, reaching it at dusk. As we drove out of the Recreation Area, we saw 2 feral pigs and more feral cats. While no one was on the use trail, there were quite a few along the trail, probably doing the loop. Last time I did this loop, it was very muddy in the lower part, so this time I had us just backtrack to the car at the upper parking lot rather than continue. Other times of year, expect lots of edible strawberry guava; a few are tasty, but don't eat more to avoid building an intolerance to their unusual taste.
