Ascent Trip ReportI couldn’t decide what to do over the long weekend with two days off for the Xmas holiday. I had made my mind up to race again at BU and then took a really bad step on Xmas morning (2 miles in on a 13 mile run) and my ankle and top of my foot really hurt. After that I decided that racing wouldn’t be a great idea so instead I headed up North for some town bagging. My goal was to hit some towns in NH I hadn’t yet run in and also to visit a few former fire tower sites. Along with that I also was aiming for a few town high points. I crammed a lot into a short trip and despite my foot feeling lousy (more on that later) I had a lot of fun.
First up was Piermont NH and Mount Piermont (the highest point in town AND a former fire tower site). I attempted to get permission from “Camp Walt Whitman” but no one picked up the phone. I was relieved to see a sign posted at the driveway for the camp which warned about parking in front of the gate but also welcomed foot traffic. The road through the camp was a sheet of ice so I put on some traction devices and headed out slowly. After .4 I reached the trail heading up the mountain. It looked like no one else had been up since the last snowfall. It wasn’t bad in the early going but about halfway up I wished I’d brought my snowshoes. I post-holed the remainder of the climb and the snow was anywhere from 6 inches to a foot deep and the crust on top was great at grabbing onto my legs.
At 2 miles I finally reached the top, it was a rough climb taking me nearly 45 minutes. After a few moments taking in the view and getting a few pictures I headed down. The “running” wasn’t much better on the descent but I managed to get back to the car in a little under 39 minutes. The post-holing wasn’t as bad as I focused on stepping in my footprints from the climb. In all it took me 1:23 for the 4 mile round-trip with 1,300’ of climb/descent.
