Ascent Trip Report

This was a beautiful hike and while the park service does not maintain the trail from Bull Pasture to the summit, it was about as easy to follow as the maintained trail (we only lost it once, briefly, at little over 4000' where the trail makes a hard left and heads down for a short stretch). The trail had maybe a half dozen places where you wanted to put your hands on the rock, but only for balance so it they were class 2- the rest of the trail was class 1, albeit almost always on uneven rocky terrain, loose and steep only for about a quarter mile stretch from about 3600'-4000'.

The views, all along the trail-not just at the summit, were spectacular.

NOTE: Cactus does get annoying close to (and sometimes over) the trail in places- I recommend bringing a machete to do a bit of trail maintenance. Do NOT try breaking the cholla with hiking poles- broken pieces tend to jump toward the hiker.

If staying at the monument campground, it's nice enough, but bring ear-plugs if you are not a heavy sleeper- my wife told me I slept through what sounded like ICE-illegal skirmishes (gunfire) and wolves howling.
