Ascent Trip Report

Did this route via the Espinosa del Diablo (the Devils backbone route). 7.75k round trip to the summit of cofre and the summit peak (?) at the far end of the route. 3hr 12min hike with around 439m of ascent. 2ks down the road from the summit area is an obvious parking area with a map of the area. Park there and cross the road and follow an obvious uphill trail that leads you to the great ridge line of the Diablo. The ridge is very exposed in one place where there is a brilliant 'stepped' gap with a metal roped handrail. Be careful if it's windy! For those of a more nervous disposition this section is hard to protect. Continue on this great little ridge up and around the great rock prominentary that is cofre de perote. Follow the rock round and you will come to buildings. There is an obvious gap between the buildings with steep narrow steps leading to the ugly masted summit. The steps are very steep but they are interesting. At the summit look for the obvious summit section amidst all of these masts ... It's to the right once you get to the top of the steps. Once you come back down the steps, head south on an obvious ridge line right to the end where you will get great views of Orizaba in the distance. Follow the road back down to the car. My distance measurement is to the peak at the end of the ridge line below perote....this is about the same height as perote's summit.
