Ascent Trip Report

Beautiful, warm sunny day. Brought my awesome dog, Ike, and spent the night before at Climber's Bivouac. Started on the Ptarmigan Trail at 5am with a head lamp and winter gear. Nice easy trek in the woods and had excellent views of sunrise as we hit the timberline. Followed the trail of wooden posts diligently as we skirted up Monitor ridge. The ridge was very windy, with a bite and we had to be careful picking our way over the rocks. Excellent views the entire way. Shortly past the seismic monitor, the wind picked up in the exposed cone and we donned masks and goggles. Definitely a tough wind and almost turned back a couple times (woah altitude!). Finally made it to the top by 10am (MUCH! slower than expected) after several short breaks to warm up the pup. It was all worth it! The snow was a beautiful, crispy white. The basin was smoldering in the cool wind. Swirls of snow spiraled around us as we looked out to Rainier, Adams, Hood and Jefferson. Descent was much quicker and we were on our way home by 2pm.
