Ascent Trip ReportWeather predictions were for snow and wind at higher elevations…. so I packed regular summer hiking gear for the trek up to the Ranger's Station, and then a second and third set of clothing for the winter-conditions towards the summit. This was the heaviest bag that I've EVER carried on a day hike - but it was worth it. Met up with San Jacinto hiking group - but broke off on my own with one member for most of the way. Just after Flat Rock, het told me to go on and that he was going to take a break…. so I kept moving. Up to Gobbler's Knob in 4:25 and getting my permit a few minutes later. Started at 7 am and felt great. Was on my way to the summit after changing into winter gear and insulated pants and everything by noon. Summit and back in line for the tram down by 4:25 and JUST missed the tram. Oh well - great hike… spent time taking photos in the snow. Was never worried about the conditions, although I DID want to reach the top. It was a HARD day - even thought I've "done" this hike before…. I learned a great lesson that each hike is different and that I should never take anything for granted because so many things can vary from one moment to another. Great hike! LOTS of snow and wind and ice at the top. Ended up using microspikes and poles - very helpful!
