Ascent Trip Report

Two days after a pretty solid snow storm, I began on the White Dot Trail and quickly got off the main trail to Cascade link. It looked like only one person had preceded me through the foot plus of new snow and then I reached the Spellman Trail which hadn't been broken yet since the storm. Spellman is not generally difficult to follow and today was not really any different. The trail is fairly easily followed, even in fresh snow. As I began the steep portion of the ascent I was joined by another hiker who had followed my footprints in. There is a section higher up where the trail takes a sharp left, which we promptly missed and ended up climbing directly up the rock face. It was hand over hand to the point where we reached a level area and then we cut left to find the Spellman Trail about 30 yards or so to our northwest. From there it was fairly easy to follow the trail again till we hit the Pumpelly trail with .7 miles to go to the summit. About a half mile from the summit, we were above tree line and the wind began to bite but we were both prepared for this eventuality and easily reached the summit where we chose to take the White Dot back down - a much more steep descent overall but much shorter.
