Ascent Trip ReportI was visiting my sister-in-laws house for Thanksgiving week so I decided to bag a couple peaks with her husband.
Burx, Sugar, and I left Manassas at 3:20am and drove out to Elk Garden Trailhead. We used this address in the GPS:
226 Bluff Lane
Whitetop, BS 24929
We arrived at 8:38 am and started our way West on the Appalachian trail towards Mount Rogers. The signs told us it was 4.5 miles to the top. We hiked along the AT and it was very windy in the open areas. You start off hiking through a cow pasture and then get into the woods. After about ten minutes you come to a Lewis Fork Wilderness sign for Jefferson National Forest. We continued on arriving at the Mount Rogers Spur trail at 10:13am. We saw a group of other hikers coming from Massie Gap. We made it to the Mount Rogers Summit at 10:26am. We were joined after a couple minutes by a large group of college student from UAB. Sugar was a star as they all wanted to take pictures with her. We started back down to Elk Garden around 10:50am and the wind was crazy strong in the open grassy areas. We arrived back at the car at 12:30pm. We got some snacks and then started West on the AT toward the summit of Whitetop. The sign said 2.5 miles. This hike was very easy with moderate evaluation gain the entire way. After about 2.75 miles we came to the Whitetop mountain road. We then took this rode up to the top. It was extremely windy in on the road up. We arrived at the peak at 1:47pm. When we got to the top we were able to make our way into the radio tower area. We found the high point which was a big concrete marker with a small tag on top stating “Holbrook Surveyors”. The concrete post has a triangular granite post in it that was G, W, S on the three sides. We took some pictures and found a Tennessee Valley Authority survey marker on the east side of the area. We then made our way back down to the car arriving at 3:08pm. Based on the signs and the extra road hiking we estimated a ~9 mile hike up mount rogers and a ~7 mile hike up Whitetop. The weather was great (besides the wind).
