Ascent Trip Report

Spent night in San Bernardino with intent of climbing MT San Gorgonio. Up at 03:30. Drove to Mill Creek Ranger Station to pick up permit and up to Fish Creek Trail Head at 0600. Checked weather night and morning of and had the worst luck ever. For the one day we had off to climb, the temps were forcasted at around 19 degrees at summit with around 28 MPH winds making chill at top 4 degrees. We decided to drive up and see what the conditions looked like since we drove 2 and 1/2 hours from San Diego and spent $200 on a hotel room. Freezing rain was drizzling as we approached the TH and when we exited the vehicle, the wind was as loud as a freight train and made us feel like we were wearing nothing. We hadnt't brought heavy weather gear, so we decided not to risk it and headed down. A ways down the approach road we pulled into a side pull out and decided to do a little hiking lower down since we had driven all the way out. The weather was a little warmer and as we started to ascend a mountain, we looked at the GPS and found out it was MT. Grinnell. We bushwhacked the whole way up hitting snow on the way, mostly 1 inch deep but up to 6 inches in spots. Wind was ferocious near the top and it started to snow on our initial descent. We headed out at 07:15 and were back to the car at 14:15. Mileage estimation around 8-10. Forgot to look before delete.
