Ascent Trip Report

Lupe climbed St. Elmo Peak earlier in the day and then proceeded towards Peak 6733. Elevation gain measured from low point reached between St. Elmo Peak and Peak 6733, which was down in Bear Gulch near a stream about where USFS Road No. 302 1F starts. Left stream proceeding S uphill (did NOT take 1F) to USFS Road No. 302 1H. Followed No. 302 1H up and around the N end of a big N/S ridge over to the E side of the ridge. Once it turned S along the E side of the ridge, USFS Road No. 302 1H was choked with deadfall timber (extensive pine bark beetle kill damage) and thistles making the going extremely slow. Lupe finally came to some much clearer ground, but not until already near the top of the ridge. Once the top of the ridge was attained, Lupe followed it S towards Peak 6733. There was plenty of deadfall timber along the ridge line too, but not as bad as on USFS Road No. 302 1H.

Lupe came to a series of high points along the ridge, but each one proved to be a false summit with slightly higher ground visible again each time a bit farther S. This exploration took considerable time due to the deadfall timber. Finally reached the last high point of the day, which possibly was Peak 6733, but Lupe's human porter currently believes it was actually Peak 6634, about 0.5 mile NNW of Peak 6733. Across a saddle, Lupe could see noticeably higher ground some distance to the SSE from this last high point. Thunderhead Mountain was not far off to the W and Lupe could see Crazy Horse, but Crazy Horse still looked a bit farther S than where Lupe was.

Lupe would have continued on down across the saddle and up to Peak 6733, it really didn't seem terribly far away. However, it had taken so long to reach Peak 6634 (St. Elmo Peak had also been a slow climb due to deadfall timber) that the sun was by now very low on the horizon. The sun was going to set within 15 minutes of leaving Peak 6634. Lupe's human porter was concerned about getting out of the tangle of deadfall and finding a clear road to follow for the return trip to the G6 before it got completely dark. So although she came close, Lupe had to give up on reaching Peak 6733 this time.
