Ascent Trip ReportOn California State Highway 36 between Wildwood and Platina find a turnoff 0.1 mile west of the Shasta-Tehama county line. I believe this is at about milepost 41 in Shasta county if you are coming from the west; coming from the east just watch for the county line at the summit. At this point you will find Forest Road 30N01, signed for "Deer Lick Springs 4". Zero your odometer and head north on 30N01. In dry conditions a carefully-driven passenger sedan should be able to do this drive if there hasn't been any road damage since my visit.
0.0 Junction of FR 30N01 and SR 36
1.1 Go straight; there is a signed junction with FR 29N07 to the left
2.2 Turn left onto FR 20N15
3.7 Y-junction, go right; left is signed 30N21
5.2 Quarry on left, go right (not hard right) onto signed 30N16
5.7 Saddle, parking pullout on left, trail starts as seldom-used road
From the saddle, walk up the old road. In a hundred yards or so there is a sign on the left with an obvious trail. Go right on the less-obvious trail, which soon becomes a well-defined trail climbing up to the ridge at about 1790m. I lost the trail here, but the ridge is open and easy walking. I picked up a path again just below the 1840+m contour. From here there are the remains of an old trail leading to the saddle in the north-center of Section 16, but I lost it on the way to the peak. The higher segment in this section of my GPS track was mostly on the trail. It's not difficult cross-country travel if you lose the path. Beyond the saddle the route gets rocky, and then brushy. I didn't find "the right way" in either direction - I just picked my way through the difficulties until things got easier just below the summit. There's a register on top, and fine views. See my GPS track for the way I went.
