Ascent Trip Report

This little peak features perhaps the most rugged “alpine” terrain of all the CoHPs I did on this trip. It is in Magnolia Bluff County Park, well signed from nearby Route 59 southwest of Evansville, WI. Wanting to do a short hike, I parked in the first, lowest parking lot after entering the park, and then started hiking uphill to the east on a trail that skirted under some sandstone bluffs above. These were looking pretty spectacular for the Midwest. The trail took me to the Equine parking area, and from there ski trails led east into forest, down into a little valley, and then up to the HP contour.

An east-west row of trees and brush bisects the 1080’ contour, with the trail immediately south of the line and a large soybean field to the north. Most reports indicate that the highest ground is near the trail or the line of trees/brush. I thrashed about to step on all likely candidates here, and then walked out into the field to get to the SE and SW lobes of the contour—nice views to the south here. It is hard to tell which area was highest.

I returned to the car via the west overlook area, on top of the bluffs I had seen earlier. It’s not the Rockies, but still quite scenic. There were many visitors scrambling among the rocks, including many families on Sunday outings. From the prow of the bluffs I found an informal trail that took me down the 200 vertical feet to a flat trail back to my car.

Those in a hurry could drive to the Equine parking lot, but you should still make time for the bluff overlook area.
