Ascent Trip ReportAfter hiking BW2, I decided that since I was in the area, I would want to hike another peak. So I headed over early Sunday morning to Lone Pine, stopping for gas, coffee and some photography. I checked in at the Ranger's Station at 8 am - they assured me that the trail was clear up to Cirque - as long as I took New Army Pass. I was thinking about descending Old Army - but was told that there was probably snow and ice still on the trail and that my best bet would be an out-and back route. I mistakenly believed that the distance to the top of Cirque was 7.5 miles via New Army.... but I was SORELY mistaken. This must be from HS Meadows and Cottonwood Pass. My overall hike was closer to 21.
Started approx 9:30 and made good progress up to New Army Pass. Going up the pass, I could feel the previous days' effort in my legs. At the top of the pass, it was a quick visual scan and then I set out towards the left. Trail-less... little or no ducks OR footprints. I occasionally pulled out the GPS and made sure that I was still on track. I think the key is to stay level and not get too high - otherwise, there will be a lot of rock scrambling and bouldering. On the way back I was better about this. The final bit was an easy scramble and just about 4 hours after I started, I was on the peak. Spent longer than normal looking around and enjoying the views.... and then hiked back down, this time avoiding the boulders and scrambling and dropping a tad lower around the bowl towards NA Pass. Retraced my steps and back to the car for a long ride hoe. So happy to have visited this peak after wanting to for so long!
