Ascent Trip Reportaka Pourianos Stavros
We climb this summit the day after our Olympus ascent, driving over the previous evening. We follow Petter Bjorstad's route - although our very brief stay at the summit appears to be undetected.
The route forks L off the main (minor!) highway at N39.48077 E23.09478 and we follow Petter's driving directions as far a hairpin N39.47117 E23.07221, 927m just before a muddy stretch which our Audi A4 probably wouldn't have managed - Andrew did well to drive as far as he did. It's apple harvest time: around 0700 several pickups drive past carrying pickers and ladders. The big red apples look very good: great crop of sweet chestnuts too.
We follow Petter's directions to the summit. The only issue we have is with the coordinates for the shortcut: bottom and top are N39.45794 E23.06401 and N39.45718 E23.06281 respectively.
On arrival at the summit area, once at the top edge of the beechwood, the highest point is immediately L of the radar dome. To minimise change of detection it is best to go R of the small beech copse (structures at far R end were unmanned) then walk up paved road; only the final 500m are exposed to view, if anyone happens to be looking. A quick GPS reading and back down. 1606m is my reading (expected vertical accuracy +/-6m). A sign we pass en route (N39.46350 E23.06623) includes a 1625 spot height but this seems unlikely; even so the prominence would only be 1488m.
We head north planning to climb Mt Ossa in the afternoon.
