Ascent Trip ReportAfter my evening ascent of Ipsizonos Oros, I drive north to the small village of Stefanina. From here, openstreetmap has a number of possible ascent routes, of at least 20km round trip. If on foot, given my afternoon flight this would mean a very early start well before sunrise. However the SatNav suggests they are driveable.
Late evening, I leave the car by the dirt road at NE end of village just before a ford N40.76234 E23.59321 and explore on foot. After an easy ford the dirt road is in good condition. So I return to the car and drive up at first light.
Crossing the shallow ford I soon turn R at N40.76375 E23.59275 and drive up. Road generally good, care needed in a few spots. Fork R at N40.78239 E23.60833, 730m onto a less well maintained road. Would be a 7km round trip hike from here but I continue, parking at N40.78266 E23.61830, 947m just before a muddy stretch (from rain in last few days): 40mins drive which the Audi A4 manages pretty easily.
3km 1hr round trip hike from here: fork R at N40.77756 E23.61835 then R again at N40.77666 E23.61862 on an old track which leads almost to summit: nice beechwood with a maple tree at highest point N40.77288 E23.61720, also a stony depression which could be remains of an ancient settlement: in UK we might call it a tumulus.
I drive back down to Stefanina and thence to Thessaloniki airport, after a very successful 10 day trip, planning to climb Romania's Moldoveanu the next day.
