Ascent Trip Report

This easy peak is immediately south of the Olympus massif and provided a nice leg stretch before the airport run, after our Ossa Oros ascent the previous afternoon.

Travelling north from the small village of Kallipeuke we turn R at N39.97245 E22.47082 on a paved road which soon turns to dirt. However it is reasonably well maintained and signpost so apparently is fairly well used. It's muddy in places after recent rain so we park at a fork N39.97327 E22.49182 with plenty of space and walk from here, an easy 4km round trip - although our Audi A4 would have made it Ok.

Keeping R at our fork we walk the forest road, forking R again. We climb the peak from N39.96160 E22.49217, initially via a sort of trail then through steep fairly open woodland. We emerge at a low point in the forest edge, then climb an easy stony grassy slope to the summit N39.95936 E22.48757 which has a trig pillar, a small aerial and a dilapidated building. The trig top has no plaque but instead a survey bolt with a 3 leg arrow style marking as seen on British benchmarks.

The view includes the long whaleback of Ossa to the south east, while immediately to the north are the big rounded southern tops of the Olympus massif (the main summits are hidden).

We retrace our steps to the forest road and are soon back at the car: 38 mins up, 9 at summit, 30 down.

We now head to Thessaloniki airport (the paved road north from Kallipeuke is rough, almost worse than the forest roads!) for Andrew's flight back to Scotland (which just two days ago voted not to become independent from the UK).

I have a spare day so investigate a few nearby P600m summits. First is Kissos Oros which appears to have a radar dome at summit: presumably military - I make no attempt to summit.

I next visit Astrapokammeno Pevko the highpoint of the peninsula next to Athos where our trip began a week ago.
