Ascent Trip Report

A quick early morning traverse of one of the most fantastic low altitude peaks in the Alps. Steep grassy slopes lead to a surprisingly long, extremely narrow summit ridge. No real technical difficulty but a lot of points where a slip would be immediately fatal. Avoid when the grass is wet or if residual snow is lying (much of the route is just on the north side of the arete. The east ridge is somewhat easier than the west, I recommend to ascend the west and descend the east. The approach from the south is shorter but requires a traverse on open ground and sheep paths from the Col Ratti back to the parking (or a road walk). The northern approach also looks very fine, starting from the valley just beyond the Lac du Vollon, where there is also ample parking. May be recommendable on a hot day, since the approach to the Col du Foron catches the sun from quite early in the day as it faces ESE.

The views are incredible - close by all of the hills of Chablais and Aravis, a host of 4000ers, especiallz Monts Blanc, Maudit and Blanc du Tacul, Dent du Geant, Grandes Jorasse, Aiguilles Verte, Grand Combin, as well as the Dents du Midi and Tour Salliere with the Berner Oberland behind. The air was so clear I could see all of the way up the Jura from Cret de la Neige to Le CHasseral in the distance. Don't miss it!
