Ascent Trip Report

A fairly long very easy route.

After yesterday's rather stormy ascent of Moldoveanu, this morning I finish the drive across, calling at Petrosani for petrol. The road to the trailhead starts at the junction at N45.41911 E23.40854, going straight uphill. It's being dug up but there's some rudimentary traffic management and I drive up. At the end of the paved road, Hotel Rusu is L and the unpaved road to the ski area is R. The latter is pretty good as far as the first ski area. The last part is steep and rockier. I park in a small grassy area N45.38374 E23.47013 1670m just below the buildings: the last 20m look pretty challenging. It would be easy enough to just walk up from the lower ski area.

I hike at 0900. Cold wind and low cloud, but promise of blue sky above and a better forecast than yesterday. At N45.38596 E23.48224 (sign and bench) I fork R, following Petter Bjorstad's description. I have the GPS track of Martin Richardson's recent ascent and this is extremely useful higher up when the trail is hidden by snow. I follow Petter's route, ticking off a few summits en route, still in thick mist. Some of the time I'm following some large mammal tracks, presumably brown bear, probably from this morning. We never meet.

After Carja summit, suddenly the clouds part and I enjoy a wonderful view of a glittering multi topped ridge against a blue sky. Progress is a bit slow in the soft snow but who cares! I reach the summit in 3h07, GPSing the trig pillar and the nearby top (cairn on outcrop) I take a few photos and then head down out of the cold wind. I visit a few more tops, with a quick prominence measurement for each. On the last summit Parangul Mic N45.38816 E23.49127 I meet a guy who has driven upon a quad. I head down the rough stony track, noting the clear view NW to Peleaga which is tomorrow's target.
