Ascent Trip Report

The July 29, 2007 hike was the classic route from the Mount Mitchell Campground. We arrived late in the afternoon, camped and began our ascent on a drizzly Sunday morning. Midway into the climb, drizzle turned to steady rain and didn't let up until we neared the end of the nearly 4,000 ft. ascent. Just below the top, we learned the summit area was closed while North Carolina demolished an observation tower and built a new one. Orange construction barriers barred entry. We decided to accept the concession stand at the parking lot just below the summit as our summit on this particular day. We bought hot chocolate and descended in a fog and rain. On Sept. 10, 2014, we returned to Mount Mitchell and completed the climb from the concession stand before climbing Mount Craig/Big Tom via a 7-mile loop.
