Ascent Trip ReportAn easy pleasant longish high level walk on a dirt road, with a slightly challenging drive in.
After our morning ascent of Ipsario the Thassos island highpoint we drive NW to the village of Neo Petritsio then follow Petter Bjorstad's route: paved road to N41.33903 E23.23260 then L at hairpin onto dirt road. It's been a wet day and a couple of muddy sections, some large deepish puddles and rocky sections make it a challenging drive in. We reach the point N41.32908 E23.21244 1392m where it's possible to turn and park.
It is 1600. Knowing the state of the road, we really need to be back on tarmac before dark which gives us 3h30 for the 15km route - hopefully doable if we jog back down the track (trail distance is 20km). Soon after our trailhead the road becomes much rougher. In 300m, on a long lefthand bend N41.32747 E23.20801 it's easy to walk R a few metres and join the parallel road on the Bulgarian side of the ridge. We turn L (W) on this road. It's raining steadily and we're glad of the woodland to shelter us from the worst of it. In time the rain stops and by halfway we suddenly come out of the cloud and enjoy views along the steep sided grassy ridge. Eventually we reach the yellow sign pointing the way L off the road up a steep trail to reach Radomir summit N41.32056 E23.12066, 2 hours after setting out.
The summit has two trig pillars (both apparently Greek design) plus a small low granite block with a hole, which is perhaps a Bulgarian trig. There are nice cloud effects and a view down into Bulgaria but no distant views. After some food we head back down, jogging the downhills, short cutting the sets of zigzags in the forest. We're down in 1h10 for 10km: would be a slow race time but gets us down before sunset and Andrew drives the rocky puddly road without incident.
Just before Neo Petritsio we find a restaurant: no clients and no English spoken but Andrew does good work with the phrase book and we have a good meal. We drive a couple of hours southwest en route to tomorrow's summit, Kaimaktsalan (Voras).
