Ascent Trip ReportSo researching this peak ahead of time, by all accounts, this was supposed to be an easy drive up to a great viewpoint. Well, not so fast poncho! Armed with maps of the local area, I plugged in the coordinates into the GPS and off we went. GPS took us to a drive up route from the east. Unfortunately it also led us to a guard gated entrance to one of the local resorts. Paul offered up his best spanish to explain that we were there to see a friend. Hmm, guard wasn't buying it. Guess when he replied in english we were at the employee entrance to the resort we knew there was no getting past him. No bueno! Ok, turn off GPS and drive back through the local neighborhoods to Los Cabos Blvd, west to Cabo Falso road, then south to the beach and the old lighthouse, easy peasy, right! Road was a little more rutted out than we would have liked but deftly drove our little rental car down the dirt road. Little nervous about getting stuck or a flat considering we were on a schedule to catch the evening flight home out of Los Cabos. Got about a third of the way down the road until we were stopped by a gate. It didn't appear to be locked, or rather, it appeared as if it could be easily opened. Paul expressed his arguments for not proceeding onto private property, esp being in Mexico. Foiled again by a gate! The lighthouse was right there on the hill- No bueno again! Will have to check into either a beach attempt another time or try Cabo Falso road again.
So thought about driving up to Cerro Prieto, but passed due to lack of time & instead drove over to check out Cerro Arco for another time. Will attempt on another visit, preferably in winter when it's not so hot & humid. Paul was a trooper for driving on those crazy little chaotic streets all while suffering from a bout of Montezuma's Revenge, poor guy. Each speed bump made him miserable.
We flew out late Saturday afternoon from Los Cabos. 24 hours later, Cat 4 Hurricane Odile slammed into the tip of Baja destroying the little districts, marinas and the airport. While we were fortunate to miss the storm, our hearts are with those that have to rebuild. I'll fondly remember driving the back streets and hope they are not completely destroyed when I return in a few months. Really hope the historic lighthouse is still there as well. What a difference a day makes.
