Ascent Trip Report

Beautiful day for hiking. Cool in the morning and just warm enough in the afternoon for a short nap on the summit.

Parked at Big Hollow Rd and climbed up Batavia creek, past the lean-to and up to Blackhead. Limited view on Blackhead so we headed south a 1/4 mile for some fantastic views to the southeast. The Hudson river was clearly visible as were the berkshires in the distance.

We backtracked to Blackhead and continued toward Black Dome Mountain. Descending Blackhead offered the best views to the south. Indian Head, Twin Mountain, Sugarloaf, and Hunter Mountain in perfect view. Continued up to Black Dome summit and had lunch on a small rock ledge with limited views south.

Returned via red trail to Big Hollow Rd. Very pleasant and easy descent. Stumbled upon a fresh spring and filled out water bladder to take some home.

Awesome day!! GPS said about 2500' vertical gain. Our loop was about 7 miles. We left car at around 10 and returned around 4. We took a fast pace up but relaxed a lot along the summits and enjoyed the views.
