Ascent Trip Report

Good water sources the whole way.

Arrived at Road's End just before the ranger station closed at 4pm. Thankfully, it was just me by myself, and Darlene the ranger was able to squeeze me in for overnight permits. Whew! Hit the trail around 4pm. Reached Sphinx Creek a little before 7pm where there are a half dozen great camping spots.

Left the Sphinx Creek campground by 730a following a faint use trail into the marshy area. The faint use trail soon disappears leaving abundant options for routes. Pick carefully, and you'll see cairns atop granite slabs and the occasional reappearance of a use trail, all of which mark your way.

My plan for Sunday, since I left late on Saturday, was to get to Sphinx Lakes by 10a, drop off my tent and other heavy things, and use the remaining daylight to summit. Thankfully, that plan worked really well. After lunch and setting up camp, I left the second Sphinx Lake at 11a, summited by 2:40p, and was back in camp by 6:30pm. For what it's worth, past Sphinx Col I opted to talus hop across instead of dropping 500ft to the basin and contouring around. No regrets.

Woke to a beautiful, quiet landscape with birds chirping. I made much better time going down than coming up. Woke at 630am, packed up by 7am, and arrived back at Road's End before 11am, after which I spent the next hour soaking in the river. Ahhhhhh.
