Ascent Trip Report

Tired after a long day of hiking, but really turned away due to the lack of light. We started at Monument Trailhead and followed the trail which traverses the east side of the mountain. At one point, the trail started to go pretty steeply downhill, so we left the trail and followed the bowl to the left of the East-West ridge which leads up to Nebo Middle. We found fairly easy passage up, though the vertical in this section of the hike turned out to be about 2800 feet. At the top, right near the saddle where we could finally see the other side of the mountain, we had to do some scrambling.

When we reached the ridge, we realized that there was a great view, but no real trail. Slightly put out, we continued north passing over Middle Nebo. A lot of scrambling the whole ridge. We started to go down towards the saddle connecting Middle and the actual peak directly north when we realized that it was getting too late to have the light we needed to make it back down the scrambling sections and back to the trail. We elected to do the bowl north of where we initially had departed the trail, which looked relatively tame compared with some of the other scrambling we had done. We made it to the trail again just as dark had fully set in. We did manage to lose the trail in the dark among some cow trails, but with a little help from GPS, recovered the trail and made it to the car about 11:30 PM.
