|Date:||Monday, August 25, 2014|
|Ascent Type:||Successful Summit Attained|
|Peak:||Forked River Mountain|
| Location:||USA-New Jersey|
| Elevation:||184 ft / 56 m|
Ascent Trip ReportI followed the eastern section of J.A. Laverdure's route. Good parking along the north side of Lacey Road (CR-614) at the junction with Penhook Road. Walk east along Lacey Road a couple of hundred feet to a gated and posted dirt road heading south. With permission, walk the road about 1.4 miles, swing left for 400 feet, bear right, cross the broad power line right-of-way, continue another 3/4 miles to a T-junction. The trail to the summit shown on the topo petered out after 1/10 mile, and I opted not to bushwhack to the summit. I retraced my steps back to the road junction, walked the road to the junction north of the mountain, then followed another dirt road to the broad summit. I retraced the same route. Ascent: 60 minutes. Descent: 55 minutes.
WARNING: A week after this hike I am covered with chigger bites that itch like crazy. I did a little bit of bushwhacking along the woods roads to avoid some deep puddles, plus the bit of abortive trail-walking on the mountain itself. My recommendation for warm-weather hikers: Load yourself up with DEET from the thighs down and stay on the roads, even if it means getting your feet wet. Trust me, wet feet beat chigger bites.
