Ascent Trip ReportWe arrived at the trailhead at 7:30 AM. The bridge across the Hudson River was rebuilt and looked newish so it ended up being only one river crossing. The water in the Opalescent River was only about calf deep so the crossing was no big deal. Most of the trail was muddy and the air was very wet. I was surprised at how flat the hike was with really only one small hill to go over before the last 1+ miles of steep herd path. As the trail climbed, there was a lot of steep, wet, and slimy rock with the slide portion being exposed. A fall on that slide could end badly. The trail including the herd paths were very easy to follow unlike some of the other unmaintained trails in the park (Dix Range is a little tricky in places). The summit had a nice overlook about 30 feet past the sign and yellow disc. After talking to a few people at the top and having some snacks we headed down and arrived back at the car by 9:00 PM. |
