Ascent Trip Report

A listed peak on the Great Basin Peak List. Little Hat Mtn stands out on the drive from Eagleville area, and is easy to spot from the summit of Eagle Peak. I got there by driving 3.5 miles east out of Eagleville on Road 38, then turning left onto Road 37 for 4.3 miles to a cattle guard. Road 37 is a well-graded dirt road. One could start the climb here, but just before the cattle guard is a 4WD road that heads SE. I went up this road about 0.6 miles and parked even though it was not quite headed for the peak. It saved me a quarter-mile of walking and a little elevation gain, but was hardly worth the effort.

I hiked NE to an obvious gully, and then headed east up the gully towards the peak. I left the gully just before it turned north and headed north up a slope towards a saddle between Little Hat Mtn and Point 6301. From here, I turned east and climbed a steep slope and through a few bands of volcanic rock onto the summit plateau. The high point is then a short, pleasant walk away. This peak has a nice view of the South Warner Mtns and the valley below. An enjoyable climb as long as one avoids the steeper volcanic slopes, which are quite loose.
