Ascent Trip ReportStarted hike to Warren Peak from Pepperdine Campground. The trailhead for the Summit Trail is just before getting to the campground and has plenty of parking. The trail begins in the trees but soon reaches the open areas near the crest of the South Warner Mountains. The trail was in excellent condition except in a few rocky volcanic sections where it was a little hard to follow.
It took a detour up Squaw Peak when I got to a ravine on the NW side of the peak. This is one of the most visible peaks in the South Warner Mtns besides Warren and Eagle Peaks. After a short stay on the summit, I continued down the SW side of the peak to rejoin the Summit Trail. After passing Patterson Lake, the trail climbs to a saddle on the east ridge of Warren Peak. I left the trail just before reaching the saddle and got on the east ridge. There's a use trail here that climbs directly towards the peak at first, then diverts to the south side when it gets too rocky and steep, and then sort of peters out. I followed the cliffs on the south side until just under the summit area and then climbed rather difficult class 3 rock to the top. There is easier class 3 rock to climb if one continues west past the summit area a short distance.
Views from the Summit trail and the peak itself were outstanding, as many others have noted before in trip reports. Smoke from fires in the Klamath area made it too hazy for me to see Mt. Shasta. Round trip distance to just Mt. Warren was 13 miles and 3000 ft of gain. Add 0.3 miles and 400 ft of gain if you also climb Squaw Peak.
