Ascent Trip Report

Left Wilson Creek TH around 3:20 pm Friday night (parking lot pretty full!). Arrived to Wilson Lake around 6:45 pm. As the parking lot indicated, lots of campsites already taken on this Friday night of a beautiful weekend so we went up to the lake to find a campsite. Turned back due to lack of comfortable selection (and no camping within 300 feet of lake) and found great spot near stream just below the lake... just outside of hearing distance of a few other tents. Left campsite around 6:10am to avoid using headlamps. Summited Challenger via North Face by 10am, took some photos, went on to Kit Carson. Summited Kit Carson 1 hour after leaving Challenger. The Avenue is nothing to worry about - ledges, although exposed, are not narrow and the class 3 climb up the gully can be kept to class 2 (but class 3 is way more fun). The gully is sloped quite a bit and has great rocks so there is little worry about sliding down, even when descending. Can avoid scree by climbing the class 2/3 stuff near the gully walls. Started descent to camp (via a traverse of the North Slope, instead of going back up to summit) by 11:30am. Back to camp site by 1:30 pm. Rested, broke down camp and hit the trail at 2:40pm. Back to car by 5:10pm with tired legs!

Mosquitoes were reported in past weeks to be severe. Must have been seasonal or annoying the other campers because I found them tolerable (I've seen bad...). I only used repellant once, when we broke down camp and I suffered one bite (and thus used repellant).

Helmets: we were one of the first groups to summit both peaks so going up I only needed a helmet because my climbing partner was above me. But on our descent, the peaks were more "crowded" (nothing like typical front range 14er crowds) and we as well as others were knocking rocks down. Biggest rock I saw knocked down was on my descent of Kit Carson (someone else was climbing up in a wierd area). Biggest rock I knocked down was on Challenger Point when I was climbing down in a wierd area (to avoid accidentally kicking a rock down below to the guy with a dog in his backpack). But you never know who is climbing around you so just be safe. Besides, girls dig climbers with helmets. :)
