Ascent Trip Report

Parked near the gate in Whispering Pines, Asked a neighbor who was out on his patio and he said "fine". Left before 9am to avoid the August heat. The route up to Cobb Mountain was easy (as described elsewhere) and I actually met another hiker who was descending. Stopped at East peak (there's a cairn) then followed the dirt road branching left to the Main Peak. The register was easy to find on the large rocks beneath a tree opposite the installation. The next person to go should take a few pencils to leave there

From there I headed west down the jeep road which eventually petered out near the low point. There was a section of scattered waist high manzanita which was easy to walk through until I came to the huge cut brush pile described by Walt Vennum ( ).

It was fairly easy to find a way around the right (north) side of the pile and then using GPS to start uphill to a point a bit south of the Sonoma County HP, mainly on a gravelly slope finding my way around intermittent manzanita until it opened out into more pines. No serious bushwhacking.

I did not use the utility pole road described by Mike Maki but did mark waypoint of the HP on my topo for the actual canister site: 38.80237N 122.74756W . Without this it would have been very tough to find the jar. Thanks Mike.

Mine was the fourth entry this year.

Heading back was not quite so simple until I realized I could use my tracking app (I use Strava on the iPhone) to retrace my steps, I just had to match the blue dot to the uphill track I used to get to the west rim. Anything to avoid that chest high manzanita bushwhacking some have reported. Once back at the giant brush pile the uphill back to the main peak was straightforward.

Total mileage from the gate to Main Peak was 3.0 miles, from there to West Rim another 1.0 miles. Total round trip 8.0 miles and a tad over 4 hours.
